    Pair your RaceBox, OBD adapter and GoPro once. LapSmith remembers your rig and checks it's ready before every session.

    Drive

    Start hands-free with Siri or the Action Button - or just drive. Laps detect automatically at the start-finish line, recording arms itself and rolls up to speed, with live timing on screen and coaching in your ears.

  3. 03

    Review, coach, share

    Compare laps corner by corner, find the time, and export overlay videos that look like they came off a race broadcast. Anyone who watched you live can still open the link for five days.

GPS & motion

  • Phone GPS Built-in No extra hardware - record laps with your phone's own GPS and motion sensors.
  • RaceBox Mini · Mini S · Micro 25Hz · BLE External 25 Hz GPS and IMU over Bluetooth LE. The Mini S and Micro also record standalone to their own memory; the Micro is externally powered rather than battery-powered.
  • Dragy GPS · Pro · Lite 25Hz · BLE Dragy performance meters over Bluetooth LE. LapSmith switches them to four-GNSS at 25 Hz where Performance mode allows, instead of leaving them at the 10 Hz default.
  • Dual XGPS160 · XGPS150 10Hz / 5Hz · Bluetooth Dual Electronics SkyPro receivers - 10 Hz on the XGPS160, 5 Hz on the XGPS150. Pair in your phone's Bluetooth settings first.
  • VTP loggers Open · BLE Any logger that speaks the open Vehicle Telemetry Protocol - position, motion and an accuracy figure in metres, whoever built it. A logger with its own screen can ask LapSmith for your lap time and delta and show them as you drive.

Engine data (OBD-II)

  • Generic ELM327 BLE / Classic Any standard ELM327-compatible OBD-II adapter, over Bluetooth Classic or LE.
  • OBDLink MX+ · MX · LX · CX BLE / Classic Fast, reliable OBD readers. On iPhone and iPad the MX+ and CX work; the LX and MX are Android-only.
  • VeePeak OBDCheck BLE+ BLE Low-energy Bluetooth OBD adapter for iOS and Android.
  • Custom PIDs Mode 01 · 22 Add sensors the standard list misses with Torque-style formulas, pasted straight in.

CAN bus

  • KDMLink N-Link BLE For Hyundai N cars - taps the internal C-CAN bus to reach boost, gear and steering angle.
  • VTP loggers Open · BLE 200 Hz per channel on a Mustang, where the DIY protocol managed 30 - VTP batches frames instead of sending one per notification, and timestamps each on the bus. If the logger can poll OBD-II, engine data arrives with no channel setup at all.
  • RaceChrono DIY BLE BLE DIY modules that tap a CAN bus in the car and stream it over Bluetooth - signals the OBD port can't reach.
  • DBC files .dbc Stream raw CAN from an OBDLink adapter and decode it with a DBC file for your car.

Action cameras

  • GoPro BLE · Wi-Fi · USB HERO5-HERO8, HERO (2018), HERO9-HERO13 Black, HERO11 Black Mini, MAX 2 and LIT HERO. Controlled over Bluetooth; footage imported over Wi-Fi or USB for auto-synced overlays.
  • DJI Osmo Action BLE · USB Osmo Action 4 and newer. Controlled over Bluetooth - LapSmith starts and stops recording automatically; import the footage afterwards for overlays.
  • Insta360 X-series 360 · BLE · Wi-Fi X3, X4, X4 Air, X5 and X6 360 cameras. Controlled over Bluetooth - LapSmith starts and stops recording automatically, with a live preview on iPhone. Flat single-lens video imports straight off the camera over Wi-Fi; reframe 360 footage in the Insta360 app first, then import it for overlays.

Heart rate

  • Bluetooth LE monitors BLE Any standard Bluetooth LE heart-rate strap or monitor - no specific brand required.
  • Apple Watch watchOS Stream live heart rate from a paired Apple Watch on iPhone. LapSmith uses a temporary Watch workout and discards it when the session ends - install the LapSmith Watch app first.

VTP open protocol

LapSmith's own Bluetooth LE protocol for loggers, published under Apache-2.0 - and on the same car, nearly seven times the CAN data rate of the DIY protocol it replaces.

VTP vs RaceChrono DIY 500Hz* 30Hz

* Protocol headroom. 200 Hz per CAN channel is verified - measured on a Mustang against the same channels over RaceChrono DIY.

  • Why it is faster Batched The protocol it replaces sends one CAN frame per 20-byte notification. VTP fills the whole Bluetooth MTU a modern phone negotiates and batches frames into it, so a busy bus gets through whole instead of being sampled. Engine data is polled at the car's pace too, not on a fixed timer.
  • Timed on the bus Device clock The logger stamps every frame as it reads it, so throttle and brake line up with position instead of with whenever the phone happened to receive them.
  • Two-way Display A logger with a screen asks LapSmith for the values it wants - lap time, delta - and gets them as you drive. Nothing it replaces can do that at all.

Bluetooth devices pair on iOS and Android, and you can mix GoPro, DJI and Insta360 action cameras with your phone's own - up to four cameras in a single session. GoPro footage imports over Wi-Fi or USB while LapSmith stays open; update your camera firmware before first pairing. HERO5-HERO8 and HERO (2018) pair once with the official GoPro Quik app first, and offload over Wi-Fi rather than USB. Insta360 X-series cameras are set up once in the official Insta360 app, pair one at a time, and need Android 9 or newer.
